There are leader boards on XBox Live and PSN and high score tables on arcade machines. None of these lists will show the following accomplishment: the highest of high scores in Donkey Kong.
On March 8th, 35-year old plastic surgeon Hank S Chien broke the world record high score with 1,061,700 points, defeating long time champ Billy Mitchell by 11,500 points. Now, to average gamers this is pretty much meaningless. But for those of us who still love the retro stuff, seeing a high score on a 20-30 year old classic machine being toppled by someone better is reason for celebrating. For the longest time, Mitchell and Steve Weibe fought back and forth for the title, even having a documentary about it called King of Kong. This new record shows that even the masters can be uprooted by someone from seemingly out of the blue.
You can find more info about the accomplishment on the official video game record keeping site, Twin Galaxies, here.
